Table & Vine is the best Bordeaux merchant in New England

Big Y’s dedication to Bordeaux dates back to the very beginning, when Big Y Wines was founded in 1962.

Bordeaux is of course home to the great red wine grapes Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, these make up the majority of the blends here. The region is split by the Gironde River, wines on the Left Bank are usually based in Cabernet Sauvignon, wines from the Right Bank are usually based in Merlot. There is a tremendous Classification system of the wines, this is where you will hear people talk about First-Growths and the like, but the majority of wines made and sold (especially by us) are not part of that (expensive) hierarchy. The region continues to produce excellent values as it long has, if you are willing to look beyond the classified wines. The wines are generally strong, with good tannin, often built for aging, though we have seen a shift to a more drinkable style in the past few years, this has been both a winemaking choice and an effect of global warming.

The range of food pairings is endless, as long as there is a meat protein involved- roast chicken, braised short ribs to grilled steak, all are great choices. I would suggest avoiding vegetarian dishes, as these wines have a natural bitterness that conflicts with veggies.

Four Bordeaux of importance for Table & Vine

Chateau Les Vergnes
$8.99 (60.8% GP)
65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc.
Back in 2006 we were in search of a red Bordeaux that we could stand behind for the high quality and that we could buy and sell for less than $10.  Dozens of samples were tasted and dozens rejected, and then along came Chateau Les Vergnes.  The beauty of this wine is that it tastes like Bordeaux, it is authentic and smooth, very well-balanced and just right for a house wine!

Chateau Durand Laplagne “Les Terres Rouges” 2018-
$13.99 (62.6% GP)- 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.
FEATURED IN THE HIGHLY RATED SECTION!
In the sub-appellations Puisseguin Saint-Emlion, we have followed this wine for a few years now, it is a consistently great value!
Ripe Merlot softness here, just a lovely fruit and not too sharp tannin.
This is a great example of Bordeaux that is young, but ready to drink.

Clos du Roy 2018
$14.99 (44.5% GP)
Exact percents not available, but Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec all go into this wine.
Hailing from the Fronsac region of Bordeaux, this wine delivers a great experience.
It tastes like really good Bordeaux with classic red fruit, and a super-dry finish.

Chateau Haura 2018
$17.99 (47.6% GP)
63% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, from the Graves region,
This is a deeper darker wine than the others, but Graves meaning gravel gives the vines great drainage so the wine is still well-balanced and light on its feet.
This is one of my favorite wines in our affordable Bordeaux group.
